Miss O’s Dad

Hello I am Ashton! I hail from the UK, bravely migrated Down Under in 2014 (snake phobia, haven’t seen one yet). My wife and I are raising a Bilingual, Bilcultual child who is a Coda (Child of Deaf Adults).

Miss O’s life is embedded with Auslan & Deaf culture which plays a big role in our Montessori journey

Giving back

We donate at least 10% of our affiliated profit to causes we care about. Working with Black Deaf UK for providing educational resources includes computers and internet data for Holy Cross Primary school (for Deaf children) in Livingstone, Zambia.

During my visit, I gave a talk, did Q&A and introduced some new Deaf-friendly games to Deaf students. I learned that, unlike privileged hearing schools, many Deaf students are not making great use of online learning platforms or accessing educational resources at Holy Cross primary school. They do not have full access to a proper internet connection, smartphones, laptops/desktops for accessing relevant information.

  • Knobbed cylinder

Great for developing the child’s sensory awareness, problem skills and fine motor skills.

  • Just hold back and supervise

For example, she steps back when I open the oven or turn the stove on.

  • Offering choices

Miss O has not to alter her hair to conform to society’s view of what is ‘acceptable.’

Common questions

  • Montessori is the education of the whole child including physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and social ways of being. It is a child-centered environment where children are given freedom to choose work based on their developmental needs and interests.

  • Coda or CODA - A child of deaf adult, often known by the acronym coda, is a person who was raised by one or more deaf parent or legal guardian. Ninety percent of children born to deaf adults can hear normally, resulting in a significant and widespread community of codas around the world.

  • Auslan is the name used for Australian Sign Language, and is the natural language signed by members of Australia’s Deaf and hard of hearing community.
